Breaking Down With Passengers: How To Keep Everyone Safe

5 min readBlack Eagle Recovery

Breaking down with passengers in the car adds an extra layer of responsibility. Whether you have young children, elderly passengers, or pets, the priority is to keep everyone safe while you wait for recovery. This guide covers the specific considerations for different types of passenger and how to make the experience as smooth as possible.

General Principles: Getting Everyone to Safety

The first priority when you break down with passengers is to get everyone out of the vehicle and to a safe location — away from the road and the flow of traffic. On a motorway, this means behind the barrier or on the embankment. On other roads, it means on the pavement or verge, well away from the carriageway. Keep everyone together and ensure everyone is visible — wearing high-visibility clothing if available.

Breaking Down With Children

Children can become frightened and unpredictable in a breakdown situation. Keep them calm by explaining what is happening in simple terms. On a motorway, ensure children exit the vehicle from the left-hand (passenger) side and hold their hands firmly — do not allow them to run or wander near the carriageway. If you have a baby or toddler in a car seat, remove them from the vehicle in their car seat if possible. Keep children entertained while you wait — a phone with games or videos can help significantly.

Breaking Down With Elderly or Mobility-Impaired Passengers

Elderly or mobility-impaired passengers may need assistance exiting the vehicle and moving to a safe location. Take your time and ensure they are stable before moving away from the vehicle. In cold or wet weather, ensure they are warm and sheltered as much as possible. If a passenger has a medical condition that could be affected by stress or cold, mention this when you call for recovery — the operator can advise and, if necessary, call for medical assistance.

Breaking Down With Pets

Pets — particularly dogs — can be difficult to manage in a breakdown situation. Keep dogs on a lead at all times once out of the vehicle. Do not allow pets near the carriageway. If you have a cat or small animal in a carrier, keep the carrier secure and away from traffic. In hot weather, ensure pets have water and are not left in a hot vehicle. If you cannot safely manage your pet at the roadside, it may be safer to keep them in the vehicle with the windows slightly open while you wait, provided you are in a safe location.

Keeping Everyone Comfortable While You Wait

While waiting for recovery, keep everyone as comfortable as possible. In cold weather, ensure everyone has warm clothing — keep a blanket in the car for emergencies. In hot weather, ensure everyone has water and is in the shade if possible. Keep phones charged — use a car charger if available. If the wait is going to be long, let passengers know the estimated arrival time so they can manage their expectations. If anyone in the group has a medical emergency, call 999 immediately.

When To Call 999 Instead of (or as Well as) Recovery

Call 999 immediately if: anyone in the vehicle is injured; you are in a live lane on a smart motorway and cannot move to safety; a passenger has a medical emergency; or you feel unsafe at the roadside. Recovery operators are not emergency services — they cannot provide medical assistance or manage a dangerous scene. In any situation where there is an immediate risk to life, 999 is the right call. You can then call your recovery provider once the emergency services are on their way.
