Transporting a supercar, classic car or other high-value vehicle is not the same as standard vehicle recovery. Low ground clearance, sensitive paintwork, specialist tyres and significant financial value all demand a different approach — and the wrong operator can cause thousands of pounds of damage. This guide covers what you need to know before arranging specialist vehicle transport.
Standard recovery trucks are designed for everyday vehicles. A supercar with 80mm of ground clearance cannot be driven onto a standard recovery ramp without damage. The loading angle, ramp design, and securing methods used for a family hatchback are simply not appropriate for a Lamborghini, Ferrari or Porsche 911. Specialist operators use low-loader trailers, air-ride transport, and soft strapping to protect low-clearance and high-value vehicles.
A specialist vehicle transport operator should have a low-loader trailer or flatbed with a very low loading angle, soft strapping or wheel cradles to secure the vehicle without contact with bodywork or wheels, and ideally air-ride suspension to minimise vibration during transport. For the most valuable vehicles, enclosed transport is available to protect against weather and road debris.
Open transport is the most common method — the vehicle is loaded onto an open flatbed and transported. This is suitable for most supercars and classics in good weather. Enclosed transport uses a covered trailer to protect the vehicle from weather, road debris and prying eyes. It is the preferred option for very high-value vehicles, concours cars, or transport in poor weather conditions.
Before arranging specialist transport, confirm the operator's goods-in-transit insurance and the level of cover provided. For very high-value vehicles, you may want to notify your own insurer and confirm that the vehicle is covered during transport. Keep a photographic record of the vehicle's condition before loading.
Classic cars present their own challenges — they may have drum brakes, no power steering, and be more fragile than modern vehicles. A specialist operator will understand how to handle a classic car safely, including how to load it without damaging the underside or bodywork. Always confirm the operator's experience with classic vehicles before booking.
