Why Does My Car Battery Keep Going Flat? 7 Common Causes

7 min readBlack Eagle Recovery

A flat car battery is frustrating at the best of times. But if your battery keeps going flat repeatedly — even after a jump start or a replacement — there is usually an underlying cause that needs to be identified and fixed. This guide explains the seven most common reasons a car battery keeps draining, how to diagnose the problem, and what to do when you need help fast.

1. The Battery Is Old and Worn Out

The most common reason a car battery keeps going flat is simply age. The average car battery lasts between three and five years, after which its ability to hold a charge deteriorates significantly. An old battery may start the car fine on a warm day but struggle in cold weather, or it may hold enough charge to start the engine but drain rapidly once the car is running. If your battery is over four years old and keeps going flat, replacement is usually the most cost-effective solution. A battery health check — which any good garage or mobile battery service can carry out — will confirm whether the battery is the problem.

2. Parasitic Drain — Something Is Drawing Power When the Car Is Off

Parasitic drain occurs when an electrical component continues to draw power from the battery after the ignition is switched off. Every car has a small amount of normal parasitic drain — for the clock, alarm system, and ECU memory — but a fault can cause excessive drain that flattens the battery overnight or within a few days. Common culprits include a boot light that stays on when the lid is closed, a faulty alarm system, an aftermarket accessory (dashcam, phone charger, or audio system) that does not switch off with the ignition, or a relay stuck in the 'on' position. A garage can carry out a parasitic drain test using a multimeter to identify the source.

3. A Faulty Alternator

The alternator is the component that charges your battery while the engine is running. If the alternator is failing or has failed, the battery will not recharge as you drive — meaning it will gradually drain and eventually go flat, even if the battery itself is in good condition. Signs of a failing alternator include a battery warning light on the dashboard, dimming headlights or interior lights, electrical components behaving erratically, or a whining or grinding noise from the engine bay. If your battery keeps going flat despite being relatively new, have the alternator tested before replacing the battery.

4. Short Journeys and Infrequent Use

Car batteries are charged by the alternator while the engine runs. If you regularly make very short journeys — under five to ten minutes — the alternator may not have enough time to fully recharge the battery after starting the engine. Over time, this leads to a progressively weaker battery. Similarly, if a car sits unused for several weeks, the battery will self-discharge and may go flat entirely. The solution is to take the car on a longer drive periodically, use a battery conditioner or trickle charger if the car is stored for extended periods, or consider a battery with a higher cold cranking amp (CCA) rating for your usage pattern.

5. Corroded or Loose Battery Terminals

Battery terminals that are corroded, loose, or poorly connected can prevent the alternator from charging the battery effectively and can also cause intermittent starting problems. Corrosion appears as a white or blue-green powdery deposit around the terminal connections. Loose terminals can cause the battery to disconnect momentarily, which may trigger warning lights or cause the engine to cut out. Cleaning the terminals with a wire brush and a solution of baking soda and water, and ensuring they are tightly secured, can resolve the issue in some cases. If the corrosion is severe or the terminals are damaged, they may need replacing.

6. Extreme Cold Weather

Cold weather significantly reduces a battery's ability to deliver power. In temperatures below freezing, a battery can lose up to 50% of its cranking power, making it much harder to start the engine — particularly diesel engines, which require more power to start. An older or weakened battery that copes adequately in summer may fail entirely in winter. If your battery keeps going flat in cold weather, it is likely at or near the end of its useful life and should be tested and replaced before the following winter. Parking in a garage overnight can also help maintain battery temperature in very cold conditions.

7. A Recent Battery Replacement That Was the Wrong Specification

Not all car batteries are interchangeable. Fitting a battery with the wrong capacity, cold cranking amp (CCA) rating, or terminal configuration for your vehicle can result in a battery that appears to work initially but drains quickly or fails prematurely. Modern vehicles with stop-start systems require an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) or EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) — fitting a standard lead-acid battery in a stop-start car will cause it to fail rapidly. Always check your vehicle handbook or consult a specialist to ensure the replacement battery meets your car's requirements.
